I’m a game designer and software developer freelancing through my company, Museum Games. I specialise in crafting interactive, game-like experiences for public spaces, designed to foster collaboration in unexpected ways. My work often involves partnering with professionals outside the gaming world, bringing fresh perspectives to the design process.

John is a veteran game designer with over 20 years of experience in the industry. Starting with console game development and later moving into mobile, he now creates unique and magical interactive experiences for public spaces - including cinemas, theatres, car parks, and other indoor and outdoor locations. This work has brought him closer to the GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) sector. In addition to crafting high-end bespoke experiences for large venues, he also helps smaller cultural institutions by training them in the skills needed to develop their own interactive exhibits. | ![]() |
Before all this I used to work in the games industry at Codemasters, I set-up and ran (for 7 years) the industry-focused BSc Computer Games Programming degree at the University of Derby, launched my own indie-studio focused on digital download games, WeAreColin and was the Senior Technical Developer at the University of Birmingham’s (now retired) Digital Humanities Hub.
I co-created [renga] – a 500 player, feature length, collaborative game played using laser pointers which won the Indiecade Developer’s Choice Award – definitely a massive highlight. Just in case you don’t know what Indiecade is – it’s often referred to as the Sundance of the Games Industry – so personally this is a pretty significant accolade 🙂
I am removing myself from twitter so instead you can find me on BlueSky or LinkedIn.

(It’s very unlikely that I won’t reply to you at all – so if you don’t hear back from me – please nudge me elsewhere. It’s happened before when emails have ended up in mine or their SPAM)
Or (usually) in person at any number of game / art / tech events around Birmingham or at Birmingham Open Media where I am an Artistic Fellow.
